NHS Security Support Services for an NHS Foundation Trust

Case Study

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SGC Security Services worked with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust as its security partner.

SGC provided NHS security support services across the hospital environment. The SGC teams supported patients, visitors, staff and Trust stakeholders while working alongside the existing Hospital Safety Team.

The contract combined general hospital security with specialist 1:1 bedwatch support for mental health and dementia patients. Service requirements changed significantly according to the needs of the Trust, ranging from 168 to 4,500 hours per week.

The Challenge

The Trust required a flexible security service that could support the main hospital while responding to changing operational demands.

SGC officers carried out regular patrols and provided a fast bleep response to incidents across the Trust. The service supplemented the existing Hospital Safety Team and provided additional support where required.

The 1:1 bedwatch service required a more specialist approach. Officers supported mental health and dementia patients within a sensitive healthcare environment.

This required officers with the right skills and awareness. It also meant balancing security requirements with the safety, dignity and wellbeing of patients.

Our Approach

SGC provided officers with training in mental health and dementia awareness to support the specialist nature of the service.

Particular emphasis was also placed on conflict resolution and physical intervention within a healthcare setting. This helped officers respond appropriately to challenging situations while considering the needs of patients and clinical teams.

SGC’s role extended beyond frontline security delivery. SGC acted as a security consultant and critical friend to the Trust, providing specialist advice on legislation, security risk planning and conflict management.

SGC also supported the Trust through physical intervention training and policy writing. Throughout the contract, the focus remained on protecting patients, staff, visitors and hospital assets.

The Result

SGC worked in partnership with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to review its security requirements and develop a clear roadmap.

This work supported a safer environment for patients, visitors and staff. It also helped the Trust establish robust security processes that reflected the demands of a complex healthcare setting.

The partnership demonstrated the value of combining frontline security with specialist knowledge, training and consultancy.

By adapting resources as requirements changed, SGC provided the Trust with flexible support throughout a period of significant operational pressure.
