Security Officer of the Year: Jason Kotkowicz
Alongside our company nomination, we are thrilled to celebrate one of our own—Jason Kotkowicz—who has been shortlisted for Security Officer of the Year. This prestigious award recognises individuals who consistently demonstrate outstanding professionalism, dedication, and excellence in frontline security roles.
Jason has been a cornerstone of our team since joining SGC in August 2021. Based at one of our Welsh NHS sites, he exemplifies everything we value: integrity, compassion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the people in his care.
A Quiet Hero with an Extraordinary Record
What truly sets Jason apart is not just his technical skill, but his humanity. Working in a hospital environment means dealing with some of the most vulnerable and distressed individuals—patients experiencing mental health crises, dementia, aggression, and fear. Jason approaches every situation with patience, empathy, and respect.
His actions speak louder than words:
• Life-saving heroism – Jason once prevented a patient from running into oncoming traffic and on another occasion helped extinguish a person who had caught fire. These weren’t headline moments for him, they were simply part of doing the right thing.
• Compassionate de-escalation – Hospital staff have repeatedly praised Jason for his calm, reassuring presence during volatile incidents. Nurses have nominated him for internal recognition, noting how he supported them through shifts with aggressive patients, checked on their wellbeing hourly, and provided both physical safety and emotional reassurance.
• Going above and beyond – Jason doesn’t wait to be asked. He proactively visits areas where issues have occurred, produces detailed and professional reports, and takes genuine initiative to improve safety and security across the site.
One NHS staff member wrote: “Supported staff on ward with aggressive patient, when patient was settled checked on us every hour to make sure staff and patient was safe. Able to get in touch with security quickly and responded. Supported and made staff feel safe throughout the shift, provided reassurance and understanding to patient and staff.”
A Natural Leader and Mentor
Jason’s influence extends beyond his own shifts. He has taken newer colleagues under his wing, mentoring them professionally and personally. He shares overtime opportunities fairly among the team—a rare and selfless practice that speaks volumes about his character. His knowledge, experience, and calm demeanour make him the officer that others turn to for advice.
According to our Northern Operations Manager, Nigel Lanham: “Jason doesn’t just wear the uniform—he elevates it. I consider the contract largely self-sufficient thanks to Jason’s presence, and yet he remains approachable, humble, and team-focused at all times. If a supervisory role became available, he would be my first recommendation without question.”
In 2024, Jason was awarded SGC’s Silver Frontline Employee of the Year Award – an internal honour that recognised his hard work, compassion, and strong moral compass. Now, we’re proud to see him recognised on a national stage.
