According to a counterterrorism specialist, the massive security operation that surrounded the funeral of the Queen in September 2022 was successful because of years of careful planning and increased public attention.
On Monday 19th September 2022, despite increased worries about potential threats, thousands of members of the public, including royalty and international leaders, were kept secure.
The magnitude exceeded the operations for the London 2012 Olympics and the Platinum Jubilee Weekend, which had up to 10,000 police officers on duty each day.
With international leaders, dignitaries, and other VIPs attending the state funeral, it is also the force’s largest worldwide protection operation. According to Nick Aldworth, a former counterterrorism police commander, it is “perhaps the biggest operation that we’re likely to mount in the UK.”
