The Terrorism Protection of Premises Bill, better known as Martyn’s Law, is a draft legislation that is expected to become law at some point this year.
Martyn Hett was one of the 22 victims who passed away in the 2017 Manchester Arena attack. The tragic event prompted his mother to propose the legislation that has become more commonly known as Martyn’s Law.
Her intention?
To place a requirement on locations/venues that are deemed publicly accessible to consider the threat of terrorism and to ensure appropriate mitigation measures are in place.
The Bill has now gone to public consultation. This consultation is targeted at “organisations, businesses, local and public authorities, and/or individuals who own or operate publicly accessible premises or events that the proposed Terrorism Bill would potentially affect”. This particular consultation is solely focused on the requirements proposed in relation to ‘Standard Duty Premises’ also known as the ‘Standard Tier’. Standard Tier premises are currently classified as venues/locations with a capacity of 100 – 799 individuals.
