UK Terrorism Threat Level Raised to Severe: What This Means and How We Are Responding

Introduction

The UK Government has announced an increase in the national terrorism threat level from Substantial to Severe, meaning a terrorist attack is considered highly likely based on current intelligence.

In response, SGC Security Services are reinforcing proportionate security measures across our operations. The safety of our staff, customers and the wider public remains our highest priority, and we continue to work closely with clients and partners to maintain safe, well‑managed environments.

What Does the “Severe” Threat Level Mean?

A Severe threat level indicates that intelligence suggests an attack is highly likely on the UK mainland. While this does not mean an incident is imminent at a specific location, it does require heightened awareness and responsive security planning across sites.Further information on the national threat level is available via UK Government and MI5 sources:

How SGC Security Services are Responding

Following the government update, we are taking immediate and proportionate action, including:

  • Reinforcing security measures across our sites
  • Increasing security personnel levels where required
  • Reviewing site‑specific procedures and standard operating processes
  • Supporting clients with updated threat awareness and guidance

Our team are liaising directly with clients to ensure they are informed and supported, and that appropriate site‑level measures are in place.

What You Can Do: Simple, Effective Steps

Everyone can play a role in maintaining safety. We encourage staff, customers and visitors to take the following actions:

  • Stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts
  • Report anything unusual, including suspicious behaviour or unusual interest in security arrangements
  • Do not touch unattended items such as bags, packages or vehicles. Move to a safe distance and notify staff or security immediately
  • Follow local site instructions and any guidance given by on‑site teams

Remaining calm and attentive helps ensure a safe environment for everyone.

How and Where to Report Concerns

If you see or hear something that does not feel right, report it through the appropriate channel:

  • Emergency or immediate danger: Call 999
  • Non‑emergency police: Call 101
  • Confidential reporting: Anti‑Terrorist Hotline 0800 789 321
  • Managed sites: Report to on‑site security, reception or site management and follow local procedures

Prompt reporting allows concerns to be assessed quickly and effectively.

Ongoing Vigilance and Professionalism

We ask all personnel to strictly follow assignment instructions and site‑specific processes, and to prioritise personal safety both while on duty and when travelling. We also thank our teams and partners for continuing to demonstrate professionalism during periods of increased awareness.

SGC Security Services will continue to monitor official government updates and will share further information as required.
