As Armed Forces Week approaches its end, leading us into Armed Forces Day tomorrow, it is an important time to recognise the contribution of serving personnel, veterans and reservists across the UK. At SGC Security Services, this commitment goes beyond words.
As Gold Award holders of the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme, we are proud to actively support those who have served, creating meaningful opportunities for long term careers within the security industry.
This Armed Forces Week we are highlighting one of our team members, Stuart Boatwright, whose journey from the British Army into security demonstrates the value that armed forces experience brings to our sector.
Our Commitment to the Armed Forces Community
Achieving the Gold Award under the Armed Forces Covenant reflects the highest level of commitment to supporting the armed forces community.
At SGC Security Services, we:
- Actively encourage applications from veterans, reservists and service leavers
- Provide structured training and clear progression pathways
- Recognise the transferable skills developed during military service
- Support reservists who continue their service alongside their civilian careers
We understand that transitioning to civilian employment can be a significant step, and we aim to make that process as smooth and rewarding as possible.
Meet Stuart Boatwright
Stuart joined SGC Security Services in January 2026, bringing with him over a decade of experience in the British Army.
His military career began in 2002 with the Queen’s Royal Lancers, where he served as a Challenger 2 gunner, driver and operator. During this time, he completed multiple operational tours, including:
- Iraq (2004) operating Challenger 2 tanks in Al-Amarah
- Iraq (2005–2006) serving as a gunner in the Basra region providing force protection
- Afghanistan (2008) deployed in the Sangin Valley as a vehicle commander with the Royal Marines Armoured Support Group
- Further deployment to Afghanistan following advanced commander training
In addition to operational roles, Stuart also spent time in Army recruitment, engaging with schools, colleges and universities to promote careers in the armed forces.
Leaving the regular Army in 2015, Stuart rejoined the military after a 5 year period away from the forces as a reservist with 101 Royal Engineers EOD & Search, where he continues to serve today. His ongoing commitment includes a peacekeeping tour in Cyprus.
Transitioning into the Security Industry
After leaving the Army in 2015 Stuart worked in the motor trade for 8 years. Stuart’s move into the security sector came later through a recommendation from a fellow reservist already working within SGC Security Services.
Like many service leavers, the transition into a new industry presented unknowns. However, Stuart quickly adapted:
“I didn’t know what to expect, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’ve enjoyed it. Working across different events and venues is very refreshing, and no two days are the same.”
Since joining in January, Stuart has shown rapid progression, taking on increased responsibilities and developing his skills across multiple sites and environments. Stuart’s journey highlights how military experience translates directly into the security sector.
Key skills he has carried over include:
- The ability to adapt quickly in changing environments
- Strong situational awareness
- Discipline and professionalism under pressure
- Teamwork in high responsibility roles
These qualities are essential within security, particularly in dynamic environments such as events and public spaces.
Advice for Others Considering a Career in Security
For those leaving the Armed Forces and considering a transition into security, Stuart offers practical advice:
“Make sure you fully understand what’s required. When I completed the courses, I was surprised at how much was involved. Prepare properly and take the time to learn the industry.”
Supporting Service Leavers Beyond Armed Forces Week
As Armed Forces Week draws to a close, the message remains clear. Supporting the armed forces community is not limited to one week of the year.
At SGC Security Services, it is part of who we are.
We are proud to stand alongside the Armed Forces Covenant and remain committed to creating career pathways where veterans and reservists can continue to thrive.
