SGC Security Services' Commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme

Case Study

At SGC Security Services we are proud to demonstrate our unwavering commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community. Since signing the Armed Forces Covenant in April 2017, we have continually strengthened our relationship with the Armed Forces, reservists, veterans, and military spouses. Our efforts to support those who serve our country go beyond mere words; they are reflected in tangible actions, policies, and partnerships.

Silver Award in the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme

As part of our dedication to the Armed Forces Covenant, SGC Security Services is honoured to hold Silver Award status in the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme. This prestigious award recognises employers who have demonstrated a significant commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community. The Silver Award highlights our ongoing efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for Reservists, Veterans, and military families within the workforce.

Support for Reservists, Veterans, and Military Spouses

SGC Security Services takes pride in being an inclusive and supportive employer for individuals from the Armed Forces community. We currently employ reservists, veterans, and military spouses and actively ensure that our workforce is aware of the positive policies we offer. These include:

  • Additional Paid Leave: We offer 10 days of additional paid leave for Reservists and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, ensuring they can balance both their military and civilian responsibilities.
  • Reservist Support Framework: We have established a comprehensive framework for supporting Reservists, which includes flexible leave policies, job security post-mobilisation, and dedicated HR contacts to guide employees before, during, and after deployment.
  • Job Application Process: Our job application form includes a section for candidates to identify as members of the Armed Forces community, which allows us to offer tailored support from the very beginning of the hiring process.

Raising Awareness Through Communication

We ensure that both current employees and potential candidates are fully aware of our Armed Forces policies and initiatives. To this end, we have implemented several key actions to promote this commitment:

  • HR Policies & Contracts of Employment: Our HR policies are clear and accessible, outlining support for Forces family members, Reservists, and CFAVs. These policies are also incorporated into employees’ contracts, reinforcing our commitment to the Armed Forces.
  • Social Media & Internal Communications: We actively share updates on our social media platforms and through internal communications to celebrate our Armed Forces employees and highlight the support available to them.

Engagement with the Cadet Movement

While we do not currently have any Cadet Force members or family members of cadets within our business, we are actively engaging with local cadet organisations to explore further ways to support the Cadet movement. Our commitment includes:

  • Donations to Cadet Organisations: We have made a recent donation to support the valuable work of cadet groups.
  • Free First Aid Training & Sponsorships: We are offering free first aid training days and sponsoring key events to help cadets develop life-saving skills.
  • Building Strong Relationships: We are working closely with local cadet organisations to ensure our support is meaningful and benefits young people in developing essential skills for their future.

Active Support for Veterans and Service Leavers

SGC Security Services is also committed to providing opportunities for veterans and service leavers. We are registered with Forces Families Jobs, the platform for training, employment, and volunteer roles for family members of currently serving military personnel. Additionally, we are registered with The Forces Employment Charity, helping veterans, service leavers, and military spouses/partners find meaningful employment.

Engagement with the Southend-on-Sea Reservist Unit

We are proud to have a strong partnership with the Southend-on-Sea Reservist Unit, where one of our employees serves as a Reservist. We actively support her role by offering the job flexibility needed to dedicate 100+ days per year to her military commitments.

Promoting Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Sunday

SGC Security Services is a staunch supporter of Armed Forces Day and Remembrance Sunday. We honour service personnel and pay tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for our country. Our support is visible through social media campaigns to raise awareness and show appreciation for our Armed Forces.

Community Engagement & Volunteer Opportunities

We understand the importance of community engagement and regularly participate in military and local events, including:

  • Southend-on-Sea Parade
  • School Talks
  • Freedom of the City Ceremonies

Furthermore, we offer dedicated volunteer days for employees to support military charities, cadet organisations, and community projects that benefit the Armed Forces. This is part of our ongoing commitment to giving back to the community and supporting those who serve.

Looking Ahead

At SGC Security Services, we are not only committed to supporting the Armed Forces Covenant, but we also strive to lead by example. We actively promote the Covenant and the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme to other organisations, advocating for positive change within the broader community. Our policies, frameworks, and initiatives ensure that our Reservists, Veterans, Cadets, and military families receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.

We look forward to continuing our support for the Armed Forces community, building on our strong foundation of commitment, and strengthening relationships with those who serve.
